NEWS UPDATES Governing Council of INFOFISH Starts Fisheries can be major export sector INFOFISH, a self-financed intergovernmental organisation is going to hold the 29th Governing Council Meeting for the first time in Bangladesh at Dhaka Regency Hotel & Resort. Muhammad Sayedul Hoque, Minister for Fisheries and Livestock inaugurated the four-day event as the chief guest while Narayon Chandra Chanda, State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock was special guest. INFOFISH was established in 1981 as a regional Fishery project of the UN-FAO, with an aim to mitigate the needs of the Asia- Pacific fishery industries in 14 South Asian countries including Bangladesh. Market intelligence and quality development for domestic and export markets, promotion and diversification of the market and technical advisory in the fisheries industry are the main mandate of the organization. INFOFISH has already signed contracts with three companies of Bangladesh named Earth Agro Farms, S&K and Virgo for Technical Advisory, Fish Processing and Export Promotion. These companies are, for the first time, preparing to export processed fillets of Tilapia, Pangasius. Earth Agro Farms will start its production unit by March 2015. Besides the garments sector; processed and value added fish products can be one of the largest export earning sectors of Bangladesh, the industry insiders expect. daily-sun
