On the back of the incident which was reported to have occurred at the weekend in Borno State, Spokesman for the military, Major-General Chris Olukolade, told journalists at a joint news conference of security agencies and the military that no part of the country would be conceded to a terrorist group. General Olukolade said that the military was well financed by the Government but also hoped that the recent one billion dollars requested by the Federal Government to finance security takes care of any security lapses in country. President Goodluck Jonathan had requested for immediate approval of one billion dollars external borrowing by the National Assembly to tackle insurgency and terrorism in Nigeria’s northeast. He stressed that there was an urgent need to upgrade the equipment, training and logistic of the country’s Armed Forces and security services to enable them confront the serious threat posed by the Boko Haram sect more forcefully. The minority leader of House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has, however, advised the Federal Government to explore ‘Trade by Barter option’ in its effort to step up military hardware and train military personnel instead of piling up debts. LET MOVE TO EBONYI STATE; The Ebonyi State House of Assembly descended into chaos Monday morning, culminating in the impeachment of the Speaker, Chukwuma Nwazunku. Another member representing Abakaliki South constituency, Helen Nwaobasi, was immediately elected to replace him via a motion moved by Eni Udoma and seconded by Jerry Obasi. ON BOKO HARAM; Suspected members of Boko Haram have kidnapped the wife and two children of Alhaji Zaraye Mala Sheriff, a Councillor in Borno state who is reported to be a cousin of former Borno state, governor, Ali Modu Sheriff. A source told Daily Trust that the men stormed the Ngala town residence of the politician in the early hours of Friday July 18th. The insurgents stormed the house of the councillor around 12:30am on Friday and asked the wife about her husband. They also asked her for the money he kept at home but she kept quiet. Luckily enough, Zaraye was at the other side of the house and when he heard the conversation, he fled,” a source from Ngala said. He said angered by her silence and the absence of their target, the sect members took her and her two children away. Continue... Up till now, nothing has been heard of the woman and her kids. We have not heard anything about the two businessmen either,” he said. Two other politicians, Alhaji Annur Mohammed and Liman Alhaji Hussaini were also reportedly kidnapped by the sect men. MEANWHILE, The All Progressives Congress, APC has described as outrageous and dubious, the request by President Goodluck Jonathan for a loan of $1bn to tackle insecurity in the country. The opposition party said that had Jonathan accounted for the $20bn oil fund which was allegedly stolen, he would not be seeking for loan from the National Assembly. The APC said in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, on Sunday, arguing that as long as corruption persists, even if the money was approved, it would not be put to good use. The party wondered why Jonathan was still asking for more money despite the N968.127bn that had been budgeted for security. The statement further urged the National Assembly not to approve the loan as it would not be used in rescuing the over 200 schoolgirls that were abducted in Chibok area of Borno State over three months ago. The statement reads in part, “The only reason the schoolgirls have remained in captivity is the sheer cluelessness and incompetence on the part of the Jonathan administration, which waited for over 19 days before even admitting that the girls were kidnapped in the first instance. “Therefore, putting more money in the hands of an incompetent and massively corrupt administration can only encourage more incompetence and corruption. That is why we are asking the National Assembly to put national interest above all other considerations by taking a dispassionate, non-partisan look at the President’s request. ON EZEKWESILI ARREST; Following earlier reports that a former Minister of Education and the BringBackOurGirls campaign co-ordinator, Oby Ezekwesili was arrested and released, the Department of State Security has making the arrest.
