NOTE: In the campaign to make communities resilient to climate change, PIA in Bohol regularly puts up essays written by student writer participants in PIA DENR Climate Change Writeshops. (9182004) NATURE By Wilson Auguis Subrio Nature has inexhaustible incomparable wealth. She is insurmountable. She appears, but much of her identity is hidden deep. When I was just a mere child, I wondered why the surroundings are green. Why is it not blue or red? But, then, as I grew up, I realized its because green is for nature. It denotes nature as sprightly good. But as the man grows knowledgeable; he produces things that are contrary to nature: non-stop cutting down of trees by the use of chainsaws, chainsaws which use fuel from mining that causes natures destruction nowadays. As a young writer, I write this feature for people who do not show concern for nature. Why cant we be nature-lovers even in simplest ways; by not destroying it but by nurturing it? Here, journalism is a very good way to call for people to care for nature. Its because journalists travel from place to place to capture news or stories and they can always see the view and situation of the environment everyday, especially in the rural areas. Most importantly, they can widely spread or disseminate information about the present situation of nature and her endangered species. It is very evident that most of those who have powers (government officials especially those in higher positions) are stately greedy because of their large scale activities. And its a nauseating truth. They did their transactions stealthily or even transparently because they have connections in government departments e.g. Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and many others. They are ruthlessly bad to nature. The radiant face our mother nature has had been ruined. Most affected by these harmful activities are our less fortunate peasants who provide us food. We provoke nature and her revenge is in catastrophes that we are now encountering. Positive outlook and self-discipline is very much needed. We got from nature our daily subsistence. We should diligently take good care of it. Nature sheds her anger through unusual phenomena. The typhoons that devastated us is her omen. Planting trees is very much concern. It rejuvenates nature and helps to nourish more than ever. The thing is people negate and neglect to help nature despite of what they get. Its hard for them to sprinkle love for nature. It saddens to think that some or most of us fail to appreciate nature and its value. Maybe what drives people not to help nature is that because they are indolent as what our national hero said; were just depending on the natural resources. But, at present, do we still have rich natural resources? Quietly, it is slowly disappearing like bubbles. The pangs of unrequited love for nature she now feels is exceedingly chronic. We Christians/Catholics are pious, but why does it seem to be not? Have pity please! Awaken from being unconscious. If we act now, its never too late. To my fellow writers and young leaders, lets unite and do our part to save our beloved mother earth. One for all and all for one.” Every little action counts. STUDENT WRITER Wilson Auguis Subrio is a participant in the recent PIA/DENR campus writers congress in Ubay. He hails from Trinidad, Bohol.
