NSW/ACT Severe Weather Warning for damaging winds for people in the Northern Rivers forecast district Issued at 4:28 pm EST on Monday 1 July 2013. DAMAGING WIND OVER THE NORTHERN RIVERS DISTRICT TODAY AND ON TUESDAY Weather Situation At 4pm, a deepening low pressure system was moving slowly off the southeast Queensland coast. The low is expected to remain slow moving today before gradually moving in an eastwards direction away from the Queensland coast during Tuesday afternoon and evening. Damaging winds around 70 km/h with peak gusts of 90 km/h are forecast for the Northern Rivers forecast district at times today and on Tuesday morning. These are most likely to be experienced along the coastal fringe, but tonight may extend into elevated areas inland. Dangerous surf conditions are also likely along the Northern Rivers coast today and tomorrow, hazardous to activities such as swimming, rockfishing and surfing. Cape Byron Automatic Weather Station has so far recorded mean wind speeds of 74 km/h today. Yamba has recorded 69 km/hr. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: Move vehicles under cover or away from trees. Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony. Keep clear of fallen power lines. For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500. The next warning will be issued by 11:00 pm EST Monday.
