#NUTSHELL – OCTOBER 18th — CLEANLINESS AND GODLINESS – Proverbs 29:17; 22:6: Some children and teens refuse to change clothes, bathe regularly or brush their teeth. Why? Kids may do these things to gain attention, to prove parents can’t make them be clean or to get even with parents for other restrictions. Teens really need to own this problem. Parents it becomes our problem when the dirt or odor interferes with us. Teens can choose to be dirty but parents, you have the right not to be offended by dirt or odor. It seems some kids grooming habits are not given a thought; therefore, we can say just stay away. You might say, “I’m sorry but the odor really gets to me, please go to another room if you choose not to bathe.” You could say, “If you want to sit on the couch, you’ll have to change those muddy jeans.” If they refuse to brush their teeth regularly, parents can inform them that not brushing is their choice, but you’ll need to pay for your own dental problems caused by neglect. Part of the issue of cleanliness is forgetting to be mindful of personal responsibilities. Forgetting is often used as an excuse for not using good grooming habits, taking care of clothing correctly and the space they occupy in your home known as “their room.” I “forgot” may get them off the hook because it may be accepted as a reason for parental leniency. Who owns the problem, parent or teen? Parents we may go too far protecting the teen from the natural consequences of their forgetful behavior; we need to ask ourselves about the cleanliness issue. I model the quality of cleanliness for my kids to observe in my home and life. Remember, clear communication in a manner that is understood by the teen is important. You must be the parental example in a controlled, friendly, resolve that sets the boundary; hopefully with the teen’s agreement and then maintain the boundary.
