Need a response to an email from our smirking idiot MP, Oliver Letwin. I queried the fact that Tories had promised to address the haves and have-nots gap yet havent. He sent me this: 1. The proportion of children growing up in relative poverty, defined as households with less than 60% of median income (the item that the UK government is committed by law to reduce to 10% by 2020) reduced from 18% in 2010/11 to 17% in 2012/13, the last year for which we so far have figures. The document containing the relevant table is entitled Households Below Average Income -- Table 4a in Section 4.3 -- and the web-link is https://gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/325416/households-below-average-income-1994-1995-2012-2013.pdf . 2.The Gini coefficient, which measures overall post-tax income inequality dropped in the UK from 0.376 in 2010/11 to 0.371 in 2012/13, the last year for which we yet have figures. (A Gini coefficient of 0 would mean that all incomes are equal, whereas a Gini coefficient of 1 would mean that one person had all the income in the UK -- so the lower the coefficient gets, the more equal post-tax income is.)
