New Protein Modification Identified A protein named Rqc2, which helps recruit transfer RNA (tRNA) to sites of ribosomal breakdowns (tRNA is responsible for bringing amino acids to the protein assembly line) has been identified. Rqc2 prompts stalled ribosomes (ribosomes that have lost their template mRNA) to add two amino acids, alanine and threonine, over and over. The current hypothesis is that when a ribosome loses its mRNA template, the resulting truncated protein gets a seemingly random sequence of alanines and threonines as a signal for the malformed protein to be destroyed. Time to add new material to the textbooks. Source: eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2015-01/uouh-dts122914.php Please share, comment, or like.
