New York City officials announced that it will replace almost all - TopicsExpress

New York City officials announced that it will replace almost all of its 10,000 pay phones with free public wifi. The city mayor Bill De Blasio said that access to the internet is not just a privilege, but a right. De Blasio said that the internet will be paid for by the ads posted on the wifi booths. The announcement raises several issues: first, has internet access in our society become so basic that it should be an essential right, such as running water? Second, the proliferation of free public wifi opens the door to wide spread privacy invasion by criminals and law enforcement alike, begging the question whether internet access is so vital that we should allow others to use it against us?
