New Yorks Republican senators used to support public schools. Last night members of the state Senate Republicans and the Independent Democratic Conference passed a horrific one-house budget resolution that includes: • Tax credits for wealthy donors via a back-door non-public school voucher scheme; • Increased per-pupil funding for charter schools; and • New and unprecedented facilities funding for charters and forced co-locations of charter schools with public schools. These draconian proposals would divert hundreds of millions of dollars to charter management and abandon the state’s constitutional responsibility to provide a sound, basic education for the 97% of students in public schools across the state.
