Nigerian Navy to Host Regional Conference in Calabar The first Gulf of Guinea Regional Maritime Awareness Capability (RMAC) Conference kicks off today in Calabar, Cross River. Rear Admiral Joe Aikhomu, the Flag Officer Commanding, revealed that the conference, which is tagged ‘Regional Maritime Awareness Capability Systems: A key for enhancing maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea’, will hold from July 29-31st. According to Aikhomu, the international event is aimed at providing complete maritime domain awareness of Nigeria’s maritime environment as well as that of the Gulf of Guinea in order to protect it. The Rear Admiral pointed out that the vast economic activities taking place in the Gulf of Guinea has stirred interest within the region because the region depends mainly on the sea for transportation, food, trade, energy and capital, all of which are imperative for national security. The conference will be graced by Nigeria’s Chief of Naval staff and his counterparts from Cote D’Ivoire, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, Sao Tome, Benin Republic, Namibia, South Africa, Senegal, Togo, Cameroun, Angola and Principe. The commanders of the United States African Command and the US Naval Forces Africa will present papers at the event.
