Nimr execution to end Saudi monarchy: Analyst A death sentence against prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr in Saudi Arabia will soon lead to the collapse of the Saudi monarchy if enforced, an analyst says, Press TV reports. Ali al-Ahmed, the director of the Institute for [Persian] Gulf Affairs, in Washington said in an interview with Press TV that “there is no hope for this monarchy to survive,” adding that al-Nimr’s “blood will register an end of the monarchy.” Commenting on the Saudi justice system, the analyst noted that Sheikh Nimr and several other dissidents were tried and handed down severe penalties at “kangaroo courts” set up by the Saudi Interior Ministry. The commentator further said that Sheikh Nimr has led just peaceful pro-democracy rallies across the kingdom. Amnesty International has called the death sentence for Sheikh Nimr “appalling,” saying the verdict should be quashed. Al-Ahmed went on to say that the Riyadh regime is resorting to different types of violence to silence voices of dissent across the country. The commentator emphasized that the Saudi authorities should be prosecuted and brought to justice because they have “blood on their hands.” He also strongly criticized the US-led Western countries’ support for the Saudi monarchy, saying that they have remained silent over the Riyadh regime’s crimes. International human rights organizations have censured Saudi Arabia for its failure to address the issue of human rights in Saudi Arabia. Critics say the country shows zero-tolerance toward dissent.
