Nine United Nations peacekeepers were killed in an ambush on their convoy on Friday. This is the deadliest attack on the UN mission in Mali yet. The peacekeepers, who were from Niger, came under attack from unidentified, heavily armed gunmen on motorbikes between the north-eastern towns of Menaka and Ansongo. UN peacekeepers have deployed across Malis north in an effort to secure the vast desert zone that was occupied by al Qaeda-linked Islamists in 2012, until the insurgents were pushed out by French forces last year.
