Not sure if Ive announced this yet (I havent told many) but Im writing a book. Its predominantly a drum study book with all my methods. Im aiming to inspire musicians to attain goals and develop focus points. Its very early days at the moment but I hope to release this next year. Heres a teaser. Hope you enjoy! I first played the drums on Christmas Day 1985. Its a plastic marching drum with plastic beater my wonderful parents got me and I cant stop playing it. I am two years old. This is the first time I discovered rhythm. Its not until years later until I pass my grade 8 professional exam. I was always a slow starter but I always get there. My name Gareth means usually achieves what he desires. Usually. It never said Gareth must work extremely hard and focus harder and harder to achieve his goals and desires. This is how I am. I never give up. Ill share my methods, concepts and all the knowledge Ive learnt from teachers, professional session players, and inspirations and I hope it inspires you creatively and it simplifies the art of rhythm. I currently live outside of London in Hertfordshire and teach 7 days a week at various levels. Ive taught hundreds of students in private lessons workshops and play in 3 bands. The most important aspect of being a drummer is not to be a drummer, but a musical drummer. What do I mean? Everyone has a style, if you have a style to your playing you have presence. Keith Moon was never as in tune with music as Carter Beauford or Stuart Copeland. But he is known World wide as a drummer because of his reckless sometimes violent and dangerous way to play his instrument and to some people that defines rock and roll. That defines what drums are about. That defines music. This is not the case for me. The first question I get asked as a drummer is how FAST can you play? Its not how fast you can do something. Ive always found that question very strange. You wouldnt say to landscape artist those mountains and forests youve painted are amazing it looks beautiful, its like youve taken a photo... How fast can you do it? Paint me it as fast as you can. My point is, it takes time to get good, spend time working on your craft, start slow with the tools and put them together, try and get better. Its not going to happen over night but it will happen if you care about the instrument and care for music. From my years of experience Ive noticed that the personality of someone comes out on the drums. From shy to extrovert, weak to aggressive, happy to sad, I notice immediately. Its fascinating to see and discover this. Im about to share all my methods with you that Ive learnt and will help you change your mind about your playing. Please appreciate that being a drummer is an art. Its not about being the fastest nor being the loudest. Its about feeling warmth and connection and understanding how to play and in which way to play. Be you, be connected, be happy. Chapter 1 How to learn. There are 4 basic levels of learning something new. If youve never spoken Chinese before and I said were going to study the language and speak an entire sentence together. The first thought to most people is No I wont be able to do it. This is level 1. After practicing the exercise and applying yourself you will get to level 2. Level 2 is I kind of understand. Now practice more. This is level 3. I understand. Its a very difficult task but play it again and again and again. Eventually you will be able to do it automatically. This is level 4. 1. I cant do it because its too hard 2. I kind of understand up it now 3. I understand it 4. I can do it automatically. Push yourself. Concentrate, focus and relax. You can do it. You can actually do it. Try. Youll surprise yourself how easy it actually was after all. If youre dedicated to a goal one day you will achieve it. ------ Even if youre not a drummer, percussionist or musician I hope this has inspired you and you go on to achieve goals and develop your craft, whatever that may be.
