Note of Library interest... release of an Australian historic novel John Pond of Oaks by Nev Ollis ISBN 978-1-62212-400-8 has already begun its passage into local school and public libraries. Brisbane, Logan, Gold Coast, Ipswich (Queensland) and Liverpool (New South Wales) public libraries have copies plus seven Queensland high schools. The Department of Education, Training and Employment, in the author’s home state, perused John Pond of Oaks and endorsed its validity by commending the work done in researching and writing this historic novel and advising that individual schools, being best placed to select resources to meet local needs, do so in consultation with the school community. As a token of support the Department then invited the author to contact each Queensland school about John Pond of Oaks and supplied the address of every school in Queensland. John Pond of Oaks, is set in the Macarthur district of New South Wales, Australia, at a time when the British were fostering a new colony to replace the one they lost with U.S. independence and which was by then engaged in bloody warfare. This area within the colony became cradle of progressive history in Australia to run parallel with U.S. development, each guided by their separate centres of influence. Although the main character in John Pond of Oaks is fictional, the circumstances of his surrounds are based on solid and well research historical fact between the years 1856 and 1868. It includes pen snapshots of many aspects of the era and the world which gave birth to the unique Australian character. The manuscript was scrutinized by a select committee of Queensland educators. On the matter of suitability to students, Queensland historian and recently retired Headmaster of Flagstone School, Joe Goodall, who mentored the book, assessed it as beneficial to high school students and older primary students to improve their understanding of early Australia. It has received exceptional readership reviews by readers of a broad spectrum of pursuits. On the matter of observing the rights of Australian Aboriginals, Colin Dillon, a retired police inspector and former manager of the indigenous college at Griffith University, Queensland, concluded that passages in the book, although very descriptive and revealing, convey indigenous customs and rites with enlightenment yet without risk of contravening their integrity. On the matter of historical truth, a select committee of historians subjected the text to vigorous study and concluded the story holds with the facts. The author, A. Waugh, who wrote Charlie’s Stoush, a World War 1 biography, found likewise. Please visit the Author’s Website, sbpra/NevOllis/ . To date several hundred copies of John Pond of Oaks have been sold.
