November 4, 2013 Who do we trust? If you follow the news at all, you have to be asking yourself, Who do we trust? If memory serves me correctly, Stephen Harper and his lot were elected on the heels of the Liberals sponsorship scandal. Canadians wanted someone they could trust and they got Harper. It was early September, 2006 when Harper spoke before the senate with his line about senate reform. This was his story and our older followers will remember the full page ads in the Globe and Mail, sponsored by the right-wing lobby group, led by Harper - the National Citizens Coalition. It was around that time he latched on to Preston Mannings coat tail and the never ending sermon of reform. As PM he personally put Duffy, Wallin and Brazeau in the Senate and all was flushed down the toilet. And what was the last time a Toronto mayor made the international news? Another believable character! And speaking of questionable mayors - how about the lot from Quebec? Closer to home we just had a provincial election where we sent the NDP packing. I dont suppose the fact that they promised not to raise taxes and then did, had anything to do with it. Yep, we got rid of them because we couldnt trust them. Here in Cape Breton even the churches are closing. Parents are angry and indignant over the abuse of children by the clergy but these same parents are often the ones who reinforced the untruths that came out of the mouths of these preachers. OK, we are born with our parents but how do all the other people get in positions of trust? It seems to me that they are put there by us - the lied to, misinformed and sometimes gullible people. And how gullible are we? Well Sobeys have deemed it necessary to colour code bags of potatoes for us: Red is for baking. Blue is for mashing. Yellow is for roasting and green is for boiling. This same store charges five cents for a plastic bag at the check-out but nips you a buck for the bag if it has five pounds of potatoes in it. Have a good one. RD
