Now Achan stench nauseates SKIMS Patient care at risk: Experts GK CITY CORRESPONDENT Srinagar, Aug 21: With no let up in stench emanating from Achan landfill site, the obnoxious smell is now a cause of nausea at Kashmir’s sole tertiary care hospital, the SK Institute of Medical Sciences(SKIMS) Soura too while health experts have cautioned of serious consequences. After densely populated areas like Nowhatta, Hawal, Khanyar and Lal Bazar, the stench has gripped the hospital. The smell hangs thick at SKIMS for the past few weeks. The SKIMS nausea Patients and their attendants seem to be worst victims of the Achan stench. “My father who recently underwent surgery has been vomiting frequently because of the stench. It’s unbearable to be here,” said an attendant keeping his nose covered. Hospital staffers said they too face inconvenience. “This stench has been worsening my migraine and I find it difficult to concentrate on work,” said a surgeon, pleading anonymity. The fears Medicos said the stench was worrisome. “The droplet nuclei of various infection which are embedded in the dust can be carried by winds to the hospital triggering infections, which may prove deadly,” cautioned a public health specialist. He said the patients who undergo surgeries at SKIMS were more vulnerable to such infections. Stinking timings The affected locals have been complaining that the stench swells by around 3:00 PM and worsens by sundown. The affected areas include Hawal, Zadibal, Nowhatta, Safa Kadal, Noor Bagh, Khanyar, Rainawari and Lal Bazar while SKIMS Soura has been a latest entrant to the stench list. The residents of affected areas said: “Let the Babus who discuss Achan stench affairs spend evenings in our areas to get the bitter feel of the ground situation so that they take some really beneficial measures.” Feigning ignorance From public circles, religious scholars, experts to political parties, many have expressed concern over the growing stench. But the ruling National Conference led government seems unmoved. In a recent write-up, prominent NC voice Tanvir Sadiq acknowledged the stench in old City. But feigning ignorance about the Achan mess, be blamed littering for the stench. The ruling coalition‘s rival, Peoples Democratic Party accuses the NC of the stench. The PDP spokesman Naeem Akhter alleges that some politicians in the ruling coalition have huge land holdings at stake in the Achan dumping site neighborhood and “so want the stench to further so that people get fed up and seek shifting of the dumping site.” For the past few years, some “land mafia” eyeing to build residential colony in Achan neighborhood, too has often been accused of brining hurdles in the smooth operations at the landfill site. The Govt plea The state government has been pleading that the garbage dumping is being undertaken in a scientific manner and “so there’s nothing to worry about”
