“Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly. But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” – Matthew 1:18-21 Matthew makes it clear that Jesus Christ’s birth was different from that of any other. Joseph did not “beget” Jesus Christ. Joseph was the “husband of Mary”, the mother of Jesus, who is called Christ. Jesus was born of an earthly mother without the need of an earthly father. Apparently Mary did not explain her situation to Joseph but chose to leave it in the hands of God. The angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph and said that the Child was conceived of the Holy Spirit. The naming of the Holy Spirit in the conception clearly shows the divine nature of the child and needing no further explanation to the Jews. He is the One who the prophets of old had spoken of. God did what He said He would do! As you sing about the birth of the baby Jesus, remember He is the fulfillment of the prophecies of old. The baby Jesus is proof that God’s Word is true!
