Nyamira is a low disease burden county, no hospital both private - TopicsExpress

Nyamira is a low disease burden county, no hospital both private and public ever fill their beds, so these epidemiological figures are treated with circumspect. In June 2012 there were 843 deliveries in public hospitals, in June 2013 after the free maternity announcement there were 991. This is a 17.5% increase, it can be partially attributed to an increase in the women of child bearing age, as with the rest of population. At the district hospital, the only public facility with a functional theatre, there were 143 deliveries in June 2012, of which 33 were cesarean deliveries, these earned the hospital KShs 157,200/-. In June 2013, the first month of the free maternity service the hospital had 161 deliveries, 27 through sections, at old billing rates this would have earned the hospital KShs. 227,750/-. However the June 1st free maternity health care declaration compensates the hospital by paying KShs. 5000/- for each delivery irrespective of mode, therefore the facility will earn KShs 805,000/-. This is almost 4 times the anticipated collection. What a boon to the hospital! Our accountant is excited. Health centres are being given KShs. 2500/- for every delivery and they are now not sending uncomplicated cases to the hospital and trying to increase facility deliveries, our wards are now even lighter! Moreover the poor patients who would stay in the hospital waiting for waiver or money are not there! Kudos to the Jubilee govt. we are waiting for the money. What are the experiences from the other counties?
