OFFICER CONVICTED: 29 GRAMMES OF GOLD STOLEN FROM EXHIBIT ROOM AT CID POLICE CORPORAL Erickson Browne and retired police officer Raymond Stephenson were yesterday convicted in a case in which 29 grammes of gold was stolen from the exhibit room at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). Browne, 45, who is currently on suspension, was charged with knowing or believing 29 grammes of gold to be stolen goods, dishonestly assisted in the disposal of same, at Kingstown, between January 1, 2013 and January 31, 2013. A resident of Biabou, Browne was charged along with the then exhibit keeper Raymond Stephenson, 42, of Vermont. Stephenson was charged with the theft of 29 grammes of gold, valued at $1,500, the property of Teresa Simmons of Rockies, stolen at Kingstown, between January 1, 2013 and January 31, 2013. Newly appointed Chief Magistrate, Rechanne Browne-Matthias found both men guilty as charged when she turned down a no case submission put forward by the men’s counsel, Duane Daniel. The men were fined $500 each, to be paid forthwith or spend one month in prison. The fines were paid. To date, the missing gold is still unaccounted for. The prosecution, led by Crown Counsel Karim Nelson, called seven witnesses in the matter. In mitigation, Daniel told the court that the men are “virgins” to the law and that a fine should be imposed in the circumstances. (KW)
