OPENING OF THE SALVATION ARMY 1885 Dr. S. W. Brierley the Superintendent of the Beechworth Lunatic Asylum, was reported saying, on the 1st September 1885 Religious excitement is the chief cause of insanity. Since the advent of the Salvation Army in Beechworth, there have been cases all directly traceable to that body, no less than fifteen cases having been admitted in two months. Thus if the population of Beechworth with the proportion of mad patients is nearly 5 per cent per annum, or one out of every twenty, are losing their reason annually. Surely Beechworth must be exceptional.
