October 29, 2013 The Parables of the Mustard Seed and of the Yeast Lk 13:18-21 18[Jesus] said, “What is the kingdom of God like? To what can I compare it? 19It is like a mustard seed that a person took and planted in the garden. When it was fully grown, it became a large bush and ‘the birds of the sky dwelt in its branches.’ ” 20Again he said, “To what shall I compare the kingdom of God? 21It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed [in] with three measures of wheat flour until the whole batch of dough was leavened.” Reflection: The kingdom of God is like a mustard seed. The kingdom of God starts small. Jesus, who is the kingdom of God in person (Origen), started as a little embryo in the womb of Mary, his Mother. He was born as a child, and he lived in the obscure village of Nazareth. He was known as the son of the carpenter. Yet, how the kingdom which he began has grown worldwide. The band that he started was also a “little flock,” but now his sheep number in the billions. The mustard seed is indeed small, but its potential for growth is great. When fully grown, it becomes a large bush where the birds can dwell. Similarly, the kingdom of God is like yeast which, though little, can leaven a whole batch of dough. Don’t be afraid to start small when working for God. Small is full of potential when filled with God.
