October, Domestic Violence Awareness Month, is a great time to remember that countless people suffer violence every day at home, the one place they should feel safe and loved. The Fort Benning Family Advocacy Program will host a variety of free events throughout the month. Join us, and be part of the solution! FAP is located in Building 241 on Baltzell Avenue. During the Purple Ribbon Campaign, Oct. 1-31, get your free purple ribbon at FAP and wear it all month to show your support for the victims of domestic violence. Ribbons are also available at Army Community Service, Building 7, on Baltzell Avenue. We will make information available to you at a number of agencies across post, including the Chaplains Office, ACS and Family Advocacy Treatment in Soldiers Plaza. Look for it! Join us at 6pm Oct. 14 for a candlelight vigil and walk from Country’s BBQ on Broad Street in Columbus to Columbus State University on the Riverwalk. Ava Davis will sign copies of her book, “Nothing Short of Miraculous,” starting at noon Oct. 16 at the PX on Marne Road. Davis recounts a true story of her encounter with domestic violence in an unlikely place. We will host a self-defense class, AVOID, SURVIVE, ESCAPE!, for military ID cardholders at Audie Murphy Fitness Center. Look for a schedule on Facebook! And be sure to ask about free child care. Join us for Control.Assault.Delete, a riveting play written and performed by the parents of a domestic violence victim, at 10am and 1pm Oct. 9 at the Kelley Hill Recreation Center. This event is free, but space is limited. Stephen Akinduro, a survivor of domestic violence, will share Resilience in the Face of Adversity at 1pm Oct. 23 at the ACS auditorium. Look for details about our K.A.R.M.A (Kids Against Ridicule, Meanness, and Aggression) anti-bullying parent seminar sometime in October. To register, call 706-545-4013/6957.
