October’s Jefferson Award winner is Danika Lam! Danika saw an opportunity to help the environment and bring joy to elementary school students’ hearts. Her old elementary school, Hacienda, had been using toxic planter boxes made out of railroad ties. These planter boxes had a negative impact on the students’ learning environment, and even imposed a danger to their health if they ate the plants. This contradicted the gardening program’s message of environmental awareness. She volunteered every week for months and even recruited other Pioneer students to help her. She continues to volunteer and work to get the garden up and running. Congrats Danika! Please continue to nominate students that have completed unique community service for the Jefferson Award.
