Oh shit! I TOTALLY forgot that no one is allowed to complain about - TopicsExpress

Oh shit! I TOTALLY forgot that no one is allowed to complain about anything, ever, because there are people who have it worse. DAMN. Let me climb up on my soapbox for just a second. Any argument that starts or ends with You shouldnt complain, because at least you --- or I cant believe youre complaining about *abc* when you know that *xyz* happened to me! is a waste of time and energy for everyone concerned. Those kinds of comments accomplish nothing more that devaluing the struggle of whomever youre talking to. You cannot tell people that they arent allowed to FEEL however they feel. Its not a competition for who has a shittier situation, or whos consistently drawn the short end of the stick the most times. Joe Blows hard luck story doesnt make yours any less relevant to YOUR life. You want some validation for everything youve been through? Fine. You win, heres your trophy. Feel better now? Vents/rants are healthy and relieve tension and stress, especially for people who tend to bottle things, or feel like they dont have anyone to talk to about their problems. Shared frustrations are some of the easiest ways people have of relating to one another, to making people feel less isolated, less of a failure at whatever it is theyre complaining about. You can file it under First World Problems or entitlement if you want to, I dont mind. Theres even a whole lot to be said for removing toxic people from your life if you feel like all they ever do is complain and youd rather not hear it. I get that. Ive spent prolonged periods of time with a co-worker who was nothing but gloom and doom, day in and day out, and she sucked all the sunshine out of every room. I GET IT. But unless youre either sympathizing or offering some constructive advice, then STFU and move on, possibly rolling your eyes out of your skull in private, and stop presuming that you have the right to tell ANYONE what THEY should or shouldnt have to complain about in their lives.
