Ok, friends... bear with me on this one... why, you might ask, does the shared video of a new family pet make me vividly recall a moment from USMC tank training at the Armys Fort Knox base? Heres why... when a Marine is stationed on another branches base, they can count on being PTd (exercised) as much if not more than at Boot Camp. Base USMC leadership will ensure that the model Marine image is projected, which brings me to my tale. Back in the fall of 96 my tank training Platoon Sergeant not only was attempting to have us look like we were chiseled from stone, but he was also preparing HIMSELF for USMC drill instructor school. Which meant we were out doing FAST training runs at dark thirty every morning. So what does this have to do with the video, you ask? Well, it relates to the difference between the Marine Corps style of training versus the Armys. During one of these dark-thirty moments we were running at a blazing and perfectly synced pace shouting this ditty, BLOOD MAKES THE GRASS GROW, MARINES MAKE THE BLOOD FLOW, KILL, KILL, KILL! Seconds later an Army training platoon marched (Im being generous... more like sauntered) by us, lazily singing these words (to the tune of Camptown Races no less), There is a bear in the deep dark woods, Yogi, Yogi... Yogi got a case of crabs, itchy, itchy bear! Whereupon our Platoon Sergeant shouted to us, Dear God, men, arent yall glad you joined the Corps! So back to the clip... I had largely filed that tank training tale away deep in the memory banks UNTIL I pulled this video from one of my game cameras. You know... after watching the captured footage time and time again, Im now kind of suspicious that the Army ditty had some truth behind it! ;-)
