Ok, note (not a rant) from a man who volunteered 27 years ago to preach to people who voluntarily decide to come hear me, & sometimes volunteer to pay my wages. So for the last fifty years Americans have been choosing to increasingly resent and reject the voluntarily accepted authority of a bible and an exhorting, praying, counseling, befriending, usually barely paid clergyman. Now they are more and more surprised to find themselves resenting the LESS AND LESS voluntary authority of the government, of increasingly militarized police, of education, of social services breathing down our necks, and worst of all, a cabal of trial lawyers and politicians running our lives through political correctness. This is both funny and sad: funny as I watch Anhauser Busch issue a statement sanctimoniously judging the NFL for not being quite sufficiently morally rigorous, and the NFL respond with perfect irony: Thanks, beer company. Sad, as I realize we are reduced now to a wide open, nearly flat public square where everyone knows everything, everyone is an expert, and anyone can judge anything, yet no one will tolerate being judged by anybody; and it takes a national consensus (not even an act of congress works anymore) to stop the celebration of two athletes who abuse their families. Maybe trading a couple of trips to church a week for the freedom of having our lived controlled by a public culture of fools was not such a good trade. I say lets get back to those preaching, praying, exhorting, bible-toting offering-plate passing SPIRITUAL authorities before we find ourselves completely handed over to the idiots weve tolerated.
