Okay, I didnt want to do this, but I feel compelled… After you stop laughing, I want to point out that this photo is why Ive been so squirrrely about positively identifying gray/red foxes based on tail tip color and leg color. In this photo (taking by trail-cam as I was sliding on my butt down a slope to get to it) my SHIRT IS, IN FACT, COMPLETELY BLACK! It had some white lettering on it, so I guess this was enough to produce IR reflection that whited the whole thing out. But it is strange to me how the white stops right at the edge of the shirt at the coat; in other words, it isnt like glare or a reflection. For some reason, with the IR illumination, the camera interpreted the color of my t-shirt as white, not black. The bright white stripes on the coat are not a surprise because these are made of reflective material. So this experience made me wonder about how the IR light might be reflected off various mammal coats. But Ive seen enough now to be convinced that this is not an issue with the red/gray fox question. Gray foxes are simply a lot more abundant locally than I thought going into this. In fact, they may be more abundant than red foxes, but because they are much more nocturnal, one rarely sees them in daylight (whereas I frequently see red foxes during the daytime). This is all just a feeble attempt to convince you that Im not a total idiot...
