Okay, I’m now officially getting PISSED. Pissed off. Angry. Full of rage. Enamored of violent thought and action. Now, for those of you who may or may not know, I busted my ass this summer to make up for a disastrous spring term. I put myself through the hell of the short term to make sure I could get shit wrapped up fall and maybe winter term if needed. An A and 2 B’s for 3 classes that ran between 8 and 9 weeks. Np. I rest up for a couple of weeks, and lo and behold I see that a hold that was on my account still hasn’t dropped off yet. So I mosey on up to the Cascade Campus to get it straightened out. I get there before 8 in the morning, have everything I need set up, speak to someone and im done with that portion by 8:25. Go Me, Right? So, im following the advisor’s advice, getting the hold taken care of, I sit around the student services building to get things straightened out. At 10 am the windows open up, inform the lady there that my account has a hold on it that I need to get removed as the matter is paid off, and everything is great, Right? Right??!?? NOPE. Im instructed that theres a problem with my Financial Aid, I need to go over to the Fin/Aid office to get it straightened out, since its only across the room and just opened up, it will be an easy quick fix, right? Or at least, would have been had I had any financial aid for fall term…. So yah, I busted my ass, making sure that all my ducks were lined up practically when the gate opened this year to make sure my financial aid was upto par, ESPECIALLY after learning from the office that ive been consistently underpaid for the previous years due to how they were computing my need. Fall: 2012 ‘well, says here you live at home with your parents, why are you paying rent?’ ‘well, Duh, simply because I live with my parents doesn’t mean I get free room and board, they got bills for having me there, and $300 a month is a better shake then im getting with a place of my own…right?’ ‘well…we’re simply not paying you to pay your rent, your refund is here to pay your expenses outside of tuition and books, im sorry, but we cant change your status now, you’ll have to file in January…in the mean time, you need to only take the classes you can afford right now…so that’s going to mean cutting back to 12 credits at most a term till summer…’ SO THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT I DID!! Fall 2013: ‘well, says here you were done with summer term, why are you still here?’ ‘I couldn’t be done by summer term, you guys informed me that I would have to dial back my classes if I wanted to be able to afford things like paying bills and rent, which I wasn’t able to do with the financial aid you had me down for fall, winter, and spring. I had to follow the advisors instructions and dial back my schedule…’ ‘oh, well. You see…we only computed your need for summer. According to your plan, you were finished last term, you’ll need to file an extention, so , yah, go back to the advising office, oh and that will be 2-3 weeks for your appeal…’ Say WHAT? So yah, I jump through my hoops make sure everything is set, cant make arrangements to pay out of pocket cuz my best friend (who doesn’t mind helping if I need it) is just like ‘wow, Jason, that’s more than I can afford, especially if you need your books and bus pass and god forbid you get declined’ Today: found out my classes were deleted for non-payment Monday, the 18th (two-week mark) came Wednesday, still no word. Holds on my account are gone, im greenlit for everything else (which was surprising since they’d deleted my classes) but still no award letter. So call em today to find out whats going on since classes start Monday. ‘oh, we’re behind in cases, and it looks like you may not be approved for this term since it starts Monday…’ Ughh..’yes, that’s why im calling today, to find out what I need to do. Do I attend first week of classes and then drop by Friday if I haven’t heard anything back by Wednesday?’ ‘oh, we wont have anything for you for 7-14 business days (this means they wont have my appeal processesed until mid October at the soonest) and by then, it will be too late to help you with fall term. Can you make arrangements to pay out of pocket?’ ‘I cant pay out of pocket, hence why im requiring financial aid…’ ‘oh, well im sorry, all you can do is register for classes today, of course, they will be deleted tomorrow for non-payment…you can register for classes all next week, but if you aren’t finalized by then, and since we have thousands of these to process, because we’re a large school, and you’re very near completion of your coursework, we probably wont approve your appeal for this term..’ WHAT?!? ‘you can meet with an advisor, and make adjustments for winter and spring terms….beyond that, you can make arrangements to pay for this term out of pocket, and hope we approve your financial aid…’ Yet again, she’s bringing up ‘out of pocket’ and I sigh and say it again. ‘I CANNOT PAY out of pocket, the friend that I discussed it with simply cannot afford it, and I am drained after summer term because you didn’t buy back 2/3 of the books you said id need that cost me an arm and a leg…’ ‘oh, well if you did pay out of pocket, we’d probably deny your appeal right there anyway…’ /Head desk x 10. ‘you have got to be kidding me….so what you’re saying here, is try my luck, if I don’t hear back by friday of next week, quit for the term and try again winter, EVEN IF MY APPEAL GOES THROUGH THE WEEK AFTER?’ ‘That’s correct..’ /facepalm. Urge to destroy human species is now overwhelming. ‘I’ll see how things go then…’ and hang up. Six Classes, EIGHT if I count the two terms of statistics that ideally my transfer school would like me to have BEFORE moving there. 9 If I break down the health/phys ed requirement to health and Tai Chi (low impact for my back and knees..) That’s ALL that’s standing between me and my Associates/transfer degree to PSU. Yah, that’s 3 terms ideally, two terms if I crunch it down for winter and spring, however, I need a math class BEFORE I take statistics, which puts me back to three terms yet again… And this ladies and gentlemen, Is Higher learning at work.
