Okay, here it is: another little teaser from Ella Provoked! The trail veered to the right, and they crested a slope in the path. Ella stopped dead in her tracks, quickly jerking Jeremy behind her. Through the trees, some eight to nine hundred yards away on a hill, she saw movement. Ella narrowed her eyes and focused. It was a girl, around her age, with long strawberry blond hair stirring in the breeze. Had the Demon ever been female? Ella concentrated on visually closing the gap. She blinked, leaned forward slightly and refocused. The girl did indeed have green eyes, but they were speckled with gold and surrounded by a dark ring. Not the Demon. A hiker perhaps? Her thoughts were interrupted by the sudden appearance of two men as they came up over the hill behind the girl. They stopped on either side of her and looked around. As Ella scanned their faces every muscle in her body tensed and tightened. Both men had flat moss green eyes, with not a speck of color and no limbal ring. Two Demons? Was she seriously looking at two Demons?? The girl spoke briefly to the men and then – oh, my god – pointed directly at Ella and Jeremy! Thoughts stampeded and stumbled through Ella’s mind. Get Jeremy to safety... Stay and fight... Can’t lead them back to Burke and Sarah... Nowhere else to go... Send Jeremy back, I can take all three... What if he gets lost? Finally the most intelligent thought of all screamed above the others – ACT NORMAL!! “What’s wrong?” Jeremy asked. He looked in the direction Ella was facing and could barely make out three people. “Nothing, I was just thinking we’ve been gone longer than I had planned, and we should be getting back. I don’t want Sarah and Burke to worry.” There was no reason yet to send him into a panic. Jeremy didn’t really have time to question her actions; Ella started jogging, and he had to focus on keeping up. Ella’s heart pounded in her chest. What was going on? She had felt uneasy while she and Jeremy had sat on the log talking. She’d noticed the unusual quiet. When was she going to learn to trust her instincts? The three companions had been a considerable distance away. Could they have been the cause of the lack of birdsong? Had they passed closer and not noticed Ella and Jeremy, or were there others? She couldn’t run as fast as she wanted to. She had to set a pace Jeremy could keep up with. She could hear him struggling behind her and she stopped.
