Okay, so, just got done seeing Interstellar. Buckle up spanky, ranting lies ahead. Also SPOILER WARNING FOR INTERSTELLAR!! Alright, first thing Ill say is this movie is nearly 3 hours. And it feels every single minute of it. But, with that said, there are good things about it too. The good stuff: The visuals are great. If I could say nothing else, it was cool to look at. It does feel very massive and filled with visual splendor at times. That did make it enjoyable to see on the big screen. Was it worth full theater price? No. Not at all. The acting. The cast is stellar (no pun intended). McConaughey, Hathaway, Caine, Ben Afflecks little brother, and that kid who filmed the bag in American Beauty, all do a great job carrying this story. As does the girl who played the daughter, Mackenzie Foy. I was very impressed at her acting chops. And I hate child actors with a passion. Its when you get into the story and the writing is when it goes downhill. This is the single most convoluted plot I think Ive ever seen. So, basically, Matthew McConaughey goes off to save the human race from extinction in a spaceship because they think they found a new planet that can sustain life. They get there, but it was all a lie and the human race is doomed. So they come back but theres this wormhole in their way, so they fly into it and it sends McConaughey into some kind of trans-multidimensional... thing that he uses to send a message to his daughter while shes ten that she uses to save humanity. Im making it sound much more simple than it is. Trust me. Theres all this stuff about morse code, and binary and, oh my god, my brain hurts. And thats what this movie feels like, sitting in math class hearing everything people are saying but not really grasping why or how, exactly. But, to the films credit, I did mostly care about the characters. Which is a step up from Inception, where I didnt really. McConaugheys relationship with his daughter is so beautifully conveyed, I kind of didnt want to go to space. I wanted to stay on earth and just have the two of them figure out how to survive the end of the world together. But, no, we go to space, and its technobabble and maybe a speech here or there about grandiose stuff that you dont care about. If you like Star Trek, youll probably like this fine. It drags quite a bit in the second act. There are one or two decently suspenseful sequences, but theres a lot of explaining about science-y stuff which, yeah, I know its necessary for the story but the fact that the story is so dependent on this much exposition might be an issue. I yawned many times during a lot of it. So yeah, great opening, terrible middle, kind of a decent last third. The scene when hes traveling through the wormhole is cool, as is the inside of it, which is a kind of machine where you can see the same place across multiple times. They did it on Doctor Who, a lot better actually, but still cool. Im glad I saw it, but not full price. Id say wait for a dollar movie at least. The scenes in space are neat, but you have to slog through a lot of tedious moments that really are just there to make it longer. You could cut a good 30 minutes and it would be fine. Better, probably. I give it a C+
