On Sept 20 on this site I wrote a post entitled Downgrading of NHS Dental Care where I stated that: 1. NHS dental funding ring fencing had been dropped. 2. No new NHS dental lists were available at this time. 3. Orthodontic Services within the Counties of Pembs, Carms & Cardigan were effectively to cease from 2015. I have been accused of misleading the public but some highly placed and respected dental professionals within the NHS dental services. There is implication that I could be bringing the dental profession into disrepute. This can have serious consequences for me by the dental profession regulator (the GDC) if correct, but the above statements were told to me directly by a senior procurement director of NHS dental services when attending my dental practice (when I specifically asked for an NHS dental list). I am only directly reporting what was said to me and my staff. I have asked now for clarification into this matter and I would apologise if I myself have been misinformed and so consequently acted to mislead you but have I? Or is this just establishment trying to control the reporting of facts told to me? Am I a whistleblower or am I libellous in respect to NHS dental policy? I am playing no game here: I am a dental professional and have worked all my life to better the quality of care for those who choose to have me as their dentist. I personally am disgusted with NHS dental funding and how it hampers good dentists from carrying out their treatment choices. I am horrified by the implication that I am causing unwarranted public fear or concern. I understand that there are budget limitations: we can no longer afford a one size fits all and hang the expense health provider, but I hate postcode lotteries and Funding/treatment availability inconsistencies. If the WAG would only be a bit more honest about their health care priorities then at least we would all know where we stand and patients can, in the process of informed consent, make choices made on the facts of treatment availability or limitation! As a private provider I have largely removed myself and my patients from these concerns but I still have to have faith when I do have to refer into the NHS dental or medical health services. I do not want to be telling unwitting lies or have confidence in a failing referral system. I need to know so I can best help my patients: the same applies with my NHS colleagues. Really, IF there is an active policy to substantially downgrade Withybush Hospital - (and possibly later Glangwilli to create some reported super hospital somewhere) - does NHS dental services really come high up on the funding priority list? I leave this thought with you to make your own opinion.
