On my way to Hiwassee this morning on route 100 I passed a woman - TopicsExpress

On my way to Hiwassee this morning on route 100 I passed a woman who was on her knees beside the road. Her hands were over her face and she was crying. I looked and saw her dead dog there in front of her. It had been hit by a car. I thought, I don’t know what I can do for that woman but I’m going back. I turned around and stopped in the road and asked her if that was her baby, meaning the black dog lying dead beside the road. She shook her head yes and kept crying. About that time an old beat up farm truck pulled up. A country boy got out. I asked him if he is going to help her. He said that is why he turned around and came back. He said to me, “I’ve got this”. I had to turn around to go back in the direction I was headed and as I drove back by them the country boy was getting a blanket out of his truck. I knew he was going to wrap that dog in that blanket and bury it for her. I’ve never seen that country boy before but I know him well. I was in mountains of Tennessee last week. I noticed those mountain people are just like our mountain people. I knew those people although I had never seen them before. We are all of the same culture. The vast majority of mountain people are conservative Christians. I’ve been hearing a lot of criticism of Christians lately, and of conservatives. I know they/we are not perfect. I know we don’t have a perfect understanding of God, The Bible, Jesus Christ, politics, or anything else. We are flawed in many ways. For me though, that young man, turning around and getting his own blanket out to use as a burial shroud for a stranger’s dog is the epitome of what it means to be Christian. And the majority of the country people are doing things like this quietly behind the scenes on a daily basis.
