On the conclusion of the anniversary season PINA40 40 years of the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch On 25 May, the anniversary season PINA40 in Wuppertal came to a close with a performance of the Pina Bausch piece “Viktor”, to enthusiastic applause and standing ovations by the audience. Ute Schäfer, the Minister of Culture for the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, paid tribute to PINA40 as a “highlight in the cultural history of North Rhine-Westphalia” and as “a celebration of art, dance and beauty.” Peter Jung, the senior mayor of the city of Wuppertal, emphasised the significance of Pina Bausch for the city: “We associate unforgettable moments with her work. The Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch has spread the name Wuppertal across the world over the past forty years, and conversely, has brought the world to Wuppertal.” The season drew a total of 56,800 audience members from home and abroad to Wuppertal, Essen and Düsseldorf to experience this unique retrospective of the past four decades at the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch. PINA40 presented 137 events on 57 days at 21 different venues in Wuppertal, Düsseldorf and Essen: 53 performances, 20 cinema events with 66 films, 10 concerts, 7 installations/exhibitions, 18 meetings/invited friends, 12 events by the Pina Bausch Foundation, 9 workshops, 8 “Underground – Works in Progress”. “We are proud to have rediscovered previously unknown and already acclaimed work during PINA40 and are delighted that we were able to attract audience members of all ages from Wuppertal, the surrounding region, Germany and abroad. This is step that makes us optimistic about looking towards the next decade.” Ulli Stepan and Robert Sturm, directors of PINA40 Support from the Kunststiftung NRW (Arts Foundation of North Rhine-Westphalia) during PINA40 made it possible to develop new exhibition formats to deal with Pina’s oeuvre, in particular the “Vorsichtshalber Vorsichtig” installations by Peter Pabst in Tony Cragg’s sculpture park. Forums of exchange and the participation of world-renowned artists, friends and experts on Pina Bausch revealed some of the working processes for existing material – set design, costume, music, the archive of the Pina Bausch Foundation – promoting reflection on what already exists and what could come about. “The anniversary season PINA40 crystallised the extraordinary artistic potential of modern dance theatre, while managing to give pointers as to how the Tanztheater Wuppertal can position itself in the future”.
