On the subject of feeding horses fish (see earlier post), I came across a great post from one of my fave human nutrition nutritionists on the unethical and unsustainable use of fish oil as a supplement, Cyndi O Meara of Changing Habits. She had recently attended a conference on the how our world fish stocks are being depleted at a worrying rate. It takes 5kg of fish to make 1L of fish oil!!!!! Holy Mary Mother of...how wasteful!!...not to mention using all of yesterdays solar energy to get it! We were not meant to obtain our nutrients from a pill, capsule, pellet or nugget. There is a great supply and ideal ratio of Omegas in a varied, healthy pasture. We can obtain our omegas through plenty of plant based sources too...you dont have to go out and graze with your horses (although it would be a really nice way to spend an afternoon :)) Horses NEED fresh forage. WE need fresh forage...and it all needs to come from a healthy, sustainable soil thats alive with mineral content and biological activity. It is so time to get our heads together and start thinking outside the bag, box, packet and pill bottle. Nourishment has nothing to do with making individual numbers balance and everything to do with creating a supportive, sustainable environment that will support health, wellness and happiness for ourselves, our families (whatever species they may be :)), and the world around us.
