On this day 36 years ago I, as a fresh faced youth of 25 stood alongside my best man Allan Roberts (RIP God bless him) to say I do to the second most beautiful girl in the world. The vicar looked at me in astonishment and said: Who are you? Me: Norman. Allan: Allan. Vicar (angrily): And what the (he paused at this point which I am quite glad about as the word he was probably going to use was hardly suitable for a church setting) are you doing here? Me (in a very small and scared voice): Getting married. Allan (speaking at the same time): Im the best man. Vicar: No youre not! Allan and I look wonderingly at each other. Vicar (by now having quite a spectacular hissy fit made all the more impressive by the fact that his voice has yet to rise above whisper level): Your wedding isnt until three oclock. GET OUT! Allan and I look round at a church full of complete strangers. At the back two young men in morning coats and buttonholes have just appeared. We try to leave discretely by the side aisle but all eyes are upon us. We had to go out past the newly arrived bride and her giggling gaggle of bridesmaids and lie down in the shade of a mausoleum erected to the memory of Ephraim Gadsby of Cricklewood in order to recover before Clare arrived an hour and a half later (and on THAT occasion the vicar was quite nice to us).
