On this day 40 years ago, Cincinnati lost a TV icon -- Paul Dixon. David Letterman once told me that after he graduated from Ball State, he was home in Indianapolis watching Channel 5s crazy weekday morning Paul Dixon Show on Indys sister AVCO TV station) and said, “That’s what I want to do.” He said Dixon did the same dumb show every day, and thats what Dave wanted to do too. And he did. Dixon gave away huge Oscherwitz Kosher Salamis. Dave gave out Big Ass canned hams. Paul Baby Dixon had a Baby Day, Dave celebrated a Late Show baby. Heres a clip from Dixons famous chicken wedding, when he officiated over the marriage of two rubber chickens, Henry & Pauline. Dixon had Henry on the show for a long time, then someone sent him Pauline to keep Henry company. Fans started mailing in clothes... and so they got married. Channel 5 repeated the chicken wedding episode after Christmas Eve Midnight Mass last week. Dixon was a WCPO-AM DJ who started on WCPO-TV shortly after the station signed on in 1949. His WCPO-TV show aired on ABC in 1951-52, and on the old Dumont TV network 1952-55. Dixon was only 56 when he suffered a fatal heart attack on Dec. 28, 1974. https://youtube/watch?v=sOuJvKJ7MIs
