On this day 70 years ago, the ultimate demise of Nazi Germany was secured when the Russian Army decisively defeated the Germans at the Battle of Kursk, one of the largest armored clashes in the history of warfare. From this point until the end of the war in 1945, the Germans would be on the defensive. The Germans hoped to cut off a number of Soviet forces by hoping to envelop the Soviet armies near the city of Kursk. A victory would reassert German strength in the East and give the Germans the momentum needed to sustain the front through 1943. However, the German offensive was defeated and countered. For the Germans, the battle represented the final strategic offensive they were able to mount in the east. For the Soviets, the decisive victory gave the Red Army the strategic initiative for the rest of the war.
