On this day in 1908 - 105 years ago - Lt. Thomas E. Selfridge of the U.S. Army Corps became the first person to die in the crash of a powered aircraft, the Wright Flyer, at Fort Myer, Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C. On this day in 1938 - 75 years ago - during the Czech Crisis, British Prime Min. Neville Chamberlain returned temporarily to London to confer with his cabinet following negotiations with Adolf Hitler at Berchtesgaden. In the meantime, Russian forces began massing along the Ukrainian frontier while Romania promised free passage of Soviet troops across its territory in order to defend Czechoslovakia. On this day in 1943 - 70 years ago - during World War II, Russian armies liberated Bryansk on the central front from the Germans.
