On this day in 1909, Deputy Marshal Alonzo W. Holden was killed - TopicsExpress

On this day in 1909, Deputy Marshal Alonzo W. Holden was killed while raiding a moonshine still. Working with law enforcement officers from a number of organizations, the raid was well coordinated to ensure safety of the men involved. They surrounded the house, and demanded entry, stating that they had warrants to serve. 2 men attempted escape through the back door, but were caught by part of the group of lawmen. While those 2 were being searched, another man ran out the backyard towards the still. Deputy Holden pursued on foot, shouting for the man to stop. When he did not, Deputy Holden fired a warning shot into the air. The other lawmen, thinking the shots were fired by more moonshiners coming to the aid of the captured men, opened fire in the direction the first shots came from. Once a cease fire was called, 2 of the officers went to investigate the original shots, and found the body of Holden. He had been shot in the head. It was later agreed that he had been hit by friendly fire. The moonshiners were taken to the Chocktaw County Jail in Hugo, OK.
