On this day in music history: January 27, 1973 - Why Cant We Live Together by Timmy Thomas hits #1 on the Billboard R&B singles chart for 2 weeks, also peaking at #3 on the Hot 100 on February 10, 1973. Written and produced by Timmy Thomas, it is the biggest hit for the singer, songwriter, and keyboardist from Evansville, IN. The song is originally recorded as a demo at Dukoff Recording Studios in North Miami, FL, featuring only Thomas accompanying himself on the Hammond Organ and a Maestro Rhythm King drum machine. TK Records exec Steve Alaimo will hear the original demo version and sign Thomas with the intent of re-recutting it with a full band. He will change his mind, feeling the original demo version cannot be improved upon. Released on TKs Glades Records imprint, it will quickly sell over two million copies in the US. Regarded as a soul classic, Why Cant We Live Together will later be covered by numerous artists, including Sade, Steve Winwood, and Joan Osborne.
