On this day in music history: October 6, 1973 - Keep On Truckin (Part 1) by Eddie Kendricks hits #1 on the Billboard R&B singles chart for 2 weeks, also topping the Hot 100 for 2 weeks on November 10, 1973. Written by Anita Poree, Frank Wilson, and Leonard Caston, it is the biggest solo hit for the former Temptations lead singer. Kendricks will hear the song after producer Frank Wilson plays him an acetate demo recording of the song. Liking what he hears, Kendricks will agree to record it. Recorded at Crystal Sound Studios in Los Angeles, CA, Keep On Truckin features Funk Brothers James Jamerson and Jack Ashford on bass and percussion, Ed Greene on drums, Billy Cooper, Dean Parks, Greg Poree on guitars, co-producer Leonard Caston on piano and King Errisson on congas. The eight minute long album track will be edited, split into two parts, and issued as the first single from his self-titled third solo album. Having built a solid following among club goers with Girl You Need A Change Of Mind and Date With The Rain, Truckin will be another club smash before crossing over to radio. Keep On Truckin will sell over a million copies in the US, becoming a popular catch phrase during the 70s, also depicted in the iconic image illustrated by underground comic artist R. Crumb (first published in Zap Comix #1 in 1968), showing four men in suits strutting down the street.
