One foot in Europe, another foot in Africa, most whites have never - TopicsExpress

One foot in Europe, another foot in Africa, most whites have never arrived in Africa. The first act of van Riebeeck was to erect a fort and then a castle the walls of which excluded Africa and Africans and within the same walls reproduced Europe. In the naming of places England and Europe was imposed on the African landscape, Heidelberg, Brixton, Crosby, Houghton etc. Even in architecture the attempt to erase Africa is reflected Cape Dutch, Tuscany etc. Most South African Whites are in Africa physically but do their best to deny it mentally and try to change the physical environment to reflect their mental attachment to Europe. The resistance to the reimposition of original African names on physical space and place effectively creates a mental panic as such individuals fear the loss of their connection to Europe and the mental picture they have of themselves.
