One hundred fifty years ago, on July 8, 1864, Confederate surgeon William McPheeters has another busy day: July 8th. Friday. In camp near Camden Our Examining Board met this morning in Gause’s Brigade. At nine o’clock I rode down and passed upon four or five cases of furloughs and transfers. On my way home [I] called by Blocher’s Artillery Battalion on business and returned to camp by noon. The remainder of the day was occupied in fixing up official documents for being forwarded &c., &c. No news of interest or other excitement. A quiet, hot day. The command remaining inactive awaiting the troubling of the waters in official circles. In the mean time, the summer is passing off and the destinies of the nation are being settle by the action of our armies on the other side of the Mississippi River and by lapse of time and the logic of events that are transpiring, as well as for their not transpiring. Gold in New York is at a premium of 138 percent. This clearly shows that the Yankee cause is on the wane and is the surest thermometer of the Yankee pulse.
