One of my favorite books to teach and one that was well received - TopicsExpress

One of my favorite books to teach and one that was well received was this slim novel by Ernest Hemingway, The Old Man and the Sea, published on this day in 1952. Its a perfect introduction to Hemingway for the literary resistant and packed with wisdom for riding the waves on lifes stormy seas. I must have read this one at least 20 times. The old man aspect of the title has become more relevant at this stage. lol Great little book. A few lines from this deceptively simple tale: “Why do old men wake so early? Is it to have one longer day?” “Every day is a new day. It is better to be lucky. But I would rather be exact. Then when luck comes you are ready.” “Its silly not to hope. Its a sin he thought.” “But man is not made for defeat, he said. A man can be destroyed but not defeated.” “I may not be as strong as I think, but I know many tricks and I have resolution.” “But, thank God, [the fish] are not as intelligent as we who kill them; although they are more noble and more able.”
