One of my very favorite books is Look Homeward, Angel (I love the line, Each moment is the fruit of forty thousand years.). Ive loved the book since I read it in high school, but this story about Thomas Wolfe (its author) doesnt hurt: Wolfe was very tall -- over 66, and he wrote the book longhand, on the top of his refrigerator in his Brooklyn apartment in the late-1920s. After finishing a page, he would toss it into a milk-crate at his feet and write the next. When he was done, he picked up the crate and delivered it, full of pages--more than 1500 of them, many out of order--to his editor at Scribner. Together, they made a masterpiece. I often wonder what my editor would do if I delivered her a milk-crate full of handwritten pages. You know, for fun. :)
