One of our guards showed up at the gate with Archie -- so terrified, I had to take his word that SHE was a HE. Ergo, ‘Archimedes’ was now part of our family. A few days later, after feeding her, talking to her and sleeping on the floor near her, I got close enough to see that Archie was a girl. She flourished and grew strong in our compound, greeting everyone who came into our yard. Then, May of 2013, Marc conspired with Louise at Nowzad to get Archie a playmate and along came Mouse. The two are the BEST of friends and though Mouse has only three legs due to a car accident. The two run each other ragged daily. They were BFF instantly. THEN, on July 31st, 2013, we got a call from a client urgently trying to find a spot for a retired explosives/de-mining dog after her adoption fell through. We searched for someone like mad that day to take Nina as we knew she was a beautiful dog- she was the regular at meetings, demanding attention from any of us. We loved Nina but thought there was no way we had room for a third. We were wrong. Nina instantly fit in with the other two and now, after months of growing together, they are truly sisters of the finest kind and we are one big happy family. We can’t imagine for ONE minute leaving them behind. When we finally do leave Afghanistan, our three fur babies HAVE to come with us. There is just no other option- they are our children and we would no sooner leave them behind than we would a blood relative. It just isn’t even a possibility.Without the help of Nowzad and their supporters, I don’t know how on earth we would manage to get them out of here when we leave.
