One of the best talks I have heard about depression from a Muslim - TopicsExpress

One of the best talks I have heard about depression from a Muslim perspective. To all those going through minor or major depression, this is something NOT to be missed! Quran tells us that the mere fact we are humans, we are gioing to face challenges. We dont get to choose the timing of the challenge, we dont get to choose the nature of the challenge, or where it may happen. Depression is not a charcter weakness. It is not a personal weakness. Being depressed is not lack of faith. What it really means is that at this point the pain you are going through is so overwhelming and you donot have enough tools to deal with the pain. So you go into depression. There is this idea that the religious people are inherently protected from becoming depressed simply because they are religious, but the reality is that it croses all bounds and socio economic, ethnic, religious boundaries. We are all prone to it. Islam never says that because you are a Muslim youll never be depressed. Islam says that because you are a Muslim, you have access to the tools which will prevent you from going into despair. So religion prevents despair, but it does not prevent depression. Despair is the thought of suicide or thinking its not worth living. It is just not depression but the consequences how people cope up with it that prevents one from despair. To be depressed is human, but to go into despair is unhuman and not acceptable. It is not about treating people with depression but also helping them not to relapse. ~ Dr. Yasir Fazaga Director of Mental Health Institute. youtu.be/SL1o-Iwpf_E
