One of the fascinating aspects of our work is taking calls from around South Africa and beyond, dealing with a range of species. This week, we have received queries from Langebaan on SAs west coast, Thabazimbi in the north (Limpopo Province) and Piet Retief in the east (Mpumalanga). Beyond SAs borders, we have assisted with queries in the Congo and today, from Île aux Nattes, a gorgeous island off the east coast of Madagascar! A sooty albatross (Phoebetria fusca), a juvenile we think, washed ashore, blown way out of its normal range. Uninjured, it was rescued by Ockie Snyman who has kept the bird in his pool to protect its soft feet. During our telephone conversation, we decided that he would feed the bird well today and attempt a release tomorrow once it is well rested. The bird is eating well, especially enjoying squid!
