One way social services encouraged welfare recipients to help themselves was to get an education so they could get a better job and become self sufficient and support their families. Now the high cost of education is out of reach for many, unless they take out student loans. Further, many college degrees are now worthless and people cannot find employment in their field and having to work at McDonalds.
