One year ago, today.... I received the fourth digital proof from the printer. In case you were wondering, a digital proof is a complete copy of the formatted interior of the book, in .pdf format. The pages are the exact same size and shape as the book would be, and are viewed exactly the same way they would be on a real book--that is, two pages side-by-side as though the opened book were laying flat on a table. That way, you can see where the pages would have to be turned. Anyway, to recap: The first proof clocked in at 400 pages, and had the authentic but unattractive and unnecessarily space-consuming Socket font at the head of each chapter. The second proof was 40 pages thinner, with the cleaner Helvetica font for the chapter titles--but it also had a host of page break problems caused by the the changes to the chapter titles. Their third proof had even more problems, but the most important was that the table of contents had never been revised to reflect all the changes from proof #1. Proof #4 was not perfect, but it was good enough. Imperfections tended to be of the fussy sort, like the two examples shown here--where one block of dialogue is neatly justified, and the other is not. (Note that both samples come from the same frikkin chapter.) But I was not going to force proof #5. It was time. With a trembling hand, I clicked APPROVE and then uploaded my formatted cover. It was time to let go.
